"We need a classroom!" was a resounding number one request by the little kids of Gankanga village when I asked what they needed. They are begging for a classroom because they are tired of the rain and sunshine which makes studying in the outdoors unbearable. The kids know what they want and it's obvious from the looks of the temporary shelter they currently use for classroom - see the picture here. Gankanga school is a community effort to provide education for their children who previously had to walk miles crossing dangerous roads to get to school. Uganda Rural Fund (URF) is collaborating with them to build permanent classroom structures, staff the school, and provide school supplies for the kids and teaching resources for the teachers
We shall use the $500 to purchase 60 corrugated iron sheets for roofing a four classroom block. This block will provide classroom space for kindergarten and primary one kids who are currently congested in one shade which is already falling apart. Parents and community members have pledged other building materials and one member donated the land for the school.
This project is a testament of what can be possible when a community bands together to design solutions for their critical needs. Through community workshops, URF will use this as an inspiration for other villages and invite people to visit the school and learn from the people of Gankanga. We shall spread word of this successful community spirit on social networks such as facebook, twitter, blogs, et to inspire the global community to consider simple collaborative solutions to community needs.
